SURPRISE FALL IRISES

Mr. Thrifty and I just hauled in the desk for his office.  Thrilled that I had one major project completed, I walked out to the back yard and look what I saw.

The fall weather this weekend was magnificent.  A little bit of summer still lingers......

Thanks Susan for the rhizomes.

ANOTHER BEDSIDE TABLE FROM THE HOMESTEAD-PART 1

During our cleanup at Mom's house last Thanksgiving, I picked up another bedside table.  There had been a matching twin bed, but that was gone.  I think it is fine to use these type of cabinets in the Great Room.  As long as you back it up to the wall, the piece works perfectly.

Here are some before pictures of this bedside table.

There are some beautiful dimensional characteristics on this piece.

More trim work.

The corners of this bedside table have lived through the lives of 10 children growing up in the house.

Some of the veneer has been worn off.

The top of the piece has really been loved!

This is the original handle.  I can't decide if I will reuse it.

With all the wear and tear on this project, I am going to have to sand it, use spackling compound and then paint it.  What color???

In the end, I have decided to use it in the foyer as an entrance focal point .  We have an spot that it would fit perfectly.

CHEETH CROSS UPCYCLED AUCTION PROJECT-PART 2

My next step was to spray paint the primed crosses with another of my favorite spray paints.  This appliance paint is the same one that I used to paint my up-cycled chandeliers.  What was even better was that this is the type of item that I look for at estate sales.  This can was not even used and for 50 cents, it was an awesome deal.

With this spray paint, I only need one coat to cover the crosses.

After drying for two days, I was ready for the next step.
It took 2 1/2 hours to apply the adhesive and mosaics.
Here is a close up of one of the crosses.

The adhesive needs to dry for a few days.

Looks a lot different than the animal print, no?

The final step is applying the grout.  One of my top ten crafting mediums is this particular non sanded grout.

and the directions that seem to have minimal language.....

Though messy, this application completely finished this project.

After 20 minutes, I use a damp rag to wipe off the excess and let it dry for two days.

After two days, I clean all the surfaces with a damp rag to get rid of any residue.

I wanted to show you some close up pictures of the glistening, finished cross.

Would anyone like to offer a bid for these special auction projects?

AUTUMN MANTLE 2014

After the Tiger Lilies that were transferred from the Maywood house in Illinois bloomed this summer, I was left with the dry stalks.  I had always wanted to incorporate the twigs into my fall display.

I chopped all the stalks down and inserted them into a glass cylinder vase.  That was easy!

At the end of the fall clearance last year, I purchased these dried raffia pumpkins.  They were placed in the bottom of the vase to bring in some of that fall color.

I came upon this next find quite by accident.  I went up to our subdivision's entrance beds to weed them.  While cleaning up the beds, I came upon this volunteer Chinese lantern plant.  I pulled it up and put it in my perennial bed in my backyard.  Looking at the plant today, you can see the plant flourishing.  There is one bloom that is already turning orange.  I hope to dry them and use them in next year's fall displays.

Now back to this posting.

Also on the clearance rack were these Chinese Lanterns.  They were laid across the back of the mantle.  More orange.....

There were two items that I purchased at Nell Hill's in Atchison this summer.  I found the texture on this garland very interesting.

Once unraveled, the garland cascaded down from one of my Oriental jars.

Because I didn't unwind the entire garland, I just laid it on top of the vase.

The other item I bought was this Oriental vase that was under $30.00.  For the price, it is a very substantial piece.

A few vintage books were placed on the mantle.

My last item was a beautiful collector plate that I received from a dear friend.  As much as it blends in with the other Oriental pieces, it is actually a scene of the Long Gray Line, a West Point depiction.  Though subtle, I love the way it fits in so well with this mantle.

And here is the Fall Mantle.

This mantle will be used through Thanksgiving.

I like the combination of the blue Oriental pieces with the orange of the pumpkins and the faux lanterns.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM

Today Mom turns 92.

Have a wonderful day and know that your family is so grateful for everything that you have done for them.

Even though we can't be with her today, our Sister's Weekend is coming up so I will get to see her in person.

Love you Mom!

AUCTION PROJECT-AN UPDATED LEOPARD(OR CHEETAH) CROSS-PART I

Now that the girls are back in school, it is time to set my sights on creating some auction projects for our schools.

I always look for crosses to donate to the grade and high school auctions.  These crosses were on sale at Hobby Lobby for $10.20 down from $29.99 a piece.  I ignored the animal print and knew that they could be updated the thrifty valentine way.

What a deal!

Taking my favorite new spray primer out, I gave the crosses a quick coat.

The crosses were dried for about  days.

Just getting rid of the animal print was a huge change.

My thoughts were to mosaic only the animal print background around the smaller cross.

I pulled my china mosaics out and started to smash them with a hammer.  I do put the china into two heavy duty zip lock bags so I don't have slivers flying everywhere when I break up the china.

After about 1 1/2 hours of hammering, I had enough to start the project.

Wait and see how the magic begins!

ESTATE SALE DESK-PART 2 TO PAINT OR NOT TO PAINT

On a very humid hot Labor Day, Mr. Thrifty and I went out to the garage to begin tackling the estate sale desk for his office.

The big question was do we paint it or refinish the desk?

Here is the desk in question.

Mr. Thrifty took out the belt sander and got to work.

We were concerned about getting the scratches on the top of the desk out.

The scratches came out.

He continued to sand the flat edges but did not complete them.

At this point, I made the decision to paint it with General Finishers Lamp Black paint.
I used this paint on the vintage oak mantle piece a few years back.  I was so happy with the deep black color.

Wait and see what 2 coats of the Lamp Black does on the desk.
