MARRYING TWO ESTATE SALE FINDS FOR A NEW SHRINE

 This next project comes from 2 estate sales.  For some background, many Germans settled here with the Von Braun rocket scientists.  We go to many sales and the fine carved German furniture and crystal is plenty.  One of the houses that we went to for the sale was a German scientists who worked on cuckoo clocks. No surprise there.  I picked up this one piece that was a part of a clock and it was $12.00. Isn't it gorgeous? I had no idea what I could do it, but I couldn't pass it up.

Fast forward two weeks later.  We walked into another estate sale and this hanging cabinet was $75.00.  There was no way I was going to pay full price, but my friend who I go with always goes back on the last day for the 50% off sale.  I told her if it was still there to pick it up for me.  Well, she went back and she picked it up for $37.50. I think it was a steal.  And, I thought about the clock part-hmmmm.  What if Mr. Thrifty could figure a way to attach it to the top.  And that is what he set out to do.

Because the top of the cabinet had a curved top, some engineering was involved.

He got his fancy wire tool out to mimic the outer curve of the top of the cabinet.  He then cut a piece of wood that was curved on one side and flat on the opposite side. 

Of course, the level needed to be used.

First, he cut the pattern out of cardboard and then transferred it to the wood.

It looks pretty good for the dry fit.

The next step will be cut the mullions out of the cabinet door.  There is also glass on both sides.  Both of those pieces will need to removed.  I am hoping to paint it all out in white.  Look at this shrine/cabinet that I found on Pinterest.

Can you believe that price? I told Mr. Thrifty that I might have a job for him when he retires!

Two coats of white chalk paint and a coat of dead flat finishing cream completed the project  

A good friend recommended to me to make a curtain drape for the inside of the shrine.  I purchased this periwinkle velvet to make fabric pumpkins for the fall. I had enough to whip up a curtain.  

                                     I can’t decide between having the curtain or not. 

 

This has been such a great project.  

CRANBERRY PILGRIM GLASS VASE FROM ESTATE SALE 2021

 Last week, I went to an estate sale.  The house had a beautiful view of Huntsville.  The inside contents were less impressive.  My thrifting buddy held up a vase and said that my peonies and hydrangeas would look great in the vase, knowing that I love all things pink. The vase had a wide enough mouth on it and it costs $5.00, so I put it in my pile of treasures to purchase.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found out how much the vase cost online. I would say that it was worth the money. 

Since I have so many blooms out on my bushes, I cut multiple blooms this morning, tied them together and hung them upside down.  I will give you an update later to tell you how well they dried.

It has been a glorious year for hydrangeas. There were 2 things I did differently this year.  I did not cut them back severely as in the past. I also took my old coffee grounds and filled an empty milk gallon container with the grounds and water and fed the plants since last fall.  I have to believe that that improved the color variation.

FIXING A BROKEN BUST

I apologize for the crazy blocking of this post. All the pictures were placed prior to my description.

One lazy Saturday afternoon, Mr. Thrifty walked into the living room and was putting on his dress shirt. When his arm came out, it caught my beautiful grey lady bust. To the ground she toppled. I was devastated! The bottom of the bust broke in a million pieces.  Fortunately, only the base broke off.

  It just so happened that I picked up a black metal ornate round base for a dollar at an estate sale the week before. I hoped that I could bring her back to life so to speak.

  Mr. Thrifty took the bust out to the garage and using his roto tool, he cleaned up the jagged base. Then, he cut a round disk out of scrap wood and drilled a hole in the middle. I painted the wood base black and he screwed the bust onto it. I think my salvaged lady came out quite nice. Here is a picture of her before the fall.

Happy Mother’s Day

The month of May we honor the Mary, Mother of Jesus.  When we were younger in grade school, my sister reminded me that we would take cut peonies from the garden to place in front statue Mary. There was also a May crowning and a crown of flowers would be placed on the head of Mary. 

It is not by coincidence that the Mother of Jesus is our Mother and we always look to her to show us the best way to be our own mother to our children.

$5.00 PEONY CHAIR 2021

Picked up this treasure at an estate sale for $5.00 a few weeks back.  Since it was going to go outside in the flower bed, I didn't even clean it.

I used the Behr paint Integrity and gave it a coat of paint. Using a matte spray, I gave it a coat of sealer.

 When the peony bushes start coming up, I will place it on top and let the foliage blossom through the chair seat.  Love recycling a vintage item!

GOLDEN MILAGRO

 My dear friend, Tara gifted me with this beautiful Milagro.  It looks beautiful on the decorative French mirror.

 I am blessed to have such a friend!
